우리는 공간을 점유하며 일상을 살아간다. 인간은 공간을 신체와 오감을 통해 인식하고, 그 안에 얽힌 문화, 사회, 정치적 구조를 읽어내면서 자신을 둘러싼 공간을 끊임없이 탐구해왔다. <사이의 대화>는 디지털 시대의 일상이 비물질적인 온라인 공간으로 확장된 것에 주목하고, 물리적 공간과 온라인의 경계를 넘나들며 공간의 다양한 층위를 새롭게 읽어내고자 한다.
서울과 런던에 거주하는 7명의 작가들은 온라인을 매개로 처음 만나 한 달간 언어, 몸짓, 시각이미지 등 다양한 소통방식으로 대화를 이어가며, 이들의 사이를 둘러싼 실험을 전개한다. 이들은 8,853km 거리의 사이, 9시간의 흐름 사이, 그리고 서로 다른 문화와 언어의 사이, 낯선 관계의 사이에 놓여있다. 여러 겹의 사이를 교차하며 작가들을 이어주는 온라인 공간은 삶이 확장된 영역이자 비물질적인 공간이며, 사적 공간인 동시에 공적 공간이 될 수 있는 경계가 모호한 ‘사이 공간’이라 할 수 있다. 차이와 지연, 흐름, 오역, 긴장, 창조적 가능성 등이 혼재된 ‘사이 공간’은 불확실하지만 자유롭고, 다채로운 변형이 일어날 수 있는 실험 공간으로 작용한다. 작가들은 서울과 런던의 물리적 공간을 잇는 온라인 ‘사이 공간’에서 실재와 가상, 온라인과 오프라인의 경계를 넘나드는 공간을 탐구하고, 그 속에서 작용하는 서로의 관계와 대화, 협력, 작업에 대한 실험을 펼쳐나갔다.
1부 「사이의 만남 Online Dialogues」은 2015년 10월 19일부터 11월 15일까지 서울 을지로 스페이스와 런던의 개별 스튜디오, 온라인 플랫폼 ilhyunm.wix.com/dialogues-between에서 진행되었다. 서울의 김다움, 정혜정, KKHH와 런던에 거주하는 Hannah Le Feuvre 한나 르페브르, Sue Park 박서현, Keshav Anand 케샤브 아난드는 1:1로 매칭되어 이메일, SNS, 화상 채팅 등이 가능한 온라인 ‘사이 공간’에서 둘만의 대화를 시작하였다. 서울과 런던의 7명의 물리적 작업 공간은 온라인 ‘사이 공간’을 통해 서로 연결된다. 작가들은 협의와 실험에 따라 자유로운 방향으로 흘러가는 대화와 그 과정을 온라인 플랫폼에 구축하며, 프로젝트 기간 중 누구나 볼 수 있도록 하였다. 2부 「사이의 대화 Offline Dialogues」에서는 1부에서 진행된 대화의 과정에서 발견한 공통 관심사나 아이디어를 전개하여 서로 상호작용한 결과를 전시로 선보인다.
We occupy space in our daily lives. Human beings have consistently studied their environments, recognising space through their bodies and five senses, identifying cultural, social and political structures in it. Dialogues Between aims to explore the idea that our daily lives have expanded beyond the physical to the virtual, attempting to better understand the various issues encountered when crossing the borderline between the physical and online.
Seven artists from Seoul and London meet online for the first time, and have a conversation with each other through various channels of communication, including language, gesture and images. The things dividing them are the distance of 8,853km, a time difference of nine hours, unfamiliar cultures, and language. Online space connects the artists, overcoming physical distance and extending the life of the project in immaterial space. There still remains an unchartered area in this ‘space between’, an ambiguous difference which will inevitably affect the dialogue. Delay, mistranslation and tension contribute to creative possibility, offering an experimental space where uncertain and diversified transformations of meaning can occur. Artists researched and explored notions of space, having regular conversations, demonstrating cooperation and working collaboratively in the online ‘space between’, which connects the physical space of Seoul and London.
The first stage of the project, Online Dialogues, runs in Euljiro Space in Seoul and the artists’ individual studios in London, with progress being updated on the online platform, ilhyunm.wix.com/dialogues-between, from October 19th to November 15th 2015. Kim Daum, Jung Hae-jung and KKHH in Seoul, and Hannah Le Feuvre, Sue Park and Keshav Anand in London, are paired with one and other in consecutive order. The paired artists work collaboratively, having frequent conversations via email, social media and webcam chat. The physical workspaces of the six artists in Seoul and London are linked through the online ‘space between’. In the second stage of the project, Offline Dialogues, common interests and ideas, revealed during conversations occurring in the first stage, are developed and result in the display of work in a collaborative exhibition.
